

Andrée (Dédée) de Jongh, a 24 year old Belgian Red Cross volunteer and ambulance driver, begins to house and feed Allied servicemen trapped behind enemy lines. Dédée’s father, a schoolmaster named Frederic (Paul) de Jongh, helps her.

Dédée de Jongh appears at the British Consulate at Bilbao, Spain, with a Scottish soldier, a survivor of St. Valery, and two Belgians. She explains that she, her father, and Arnold Depè had together planned a chain of safehouses in Brussels, Paris, and the frontier zone. Their goal was to establish an escape line to Spain for downed Allied airmen. Dédée insists the line should remain in Belgian hands.
