About When I Rise

When I Rise is an award winning documentary about Barbara Smith Conrad, a gifted University of Texas music student who finds herself at the epicenter of racial controversy, struggling against the odds and ultimately ascending to the heights of international opera. After premiering at SXSW, the film has gone on to 11 film festivals, including Hot Docs in Toronto, and festivals in Denver, New Orleans, Santa Barbara, Dallas, and New York. 'When I Rise' is the winner of multiple awards, including the Santa Barbara Fund Social Justice Award and the Audience Choice Award at the Indy Film Festival. The film had it's US television premiere in February 2011 on PBS' Independent Lens series, and is now available on DVD and Instant Viewing via Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon.
